Greencastle man spared drive ban 21.06.07

A young fisherman has been spared a driving ban after a judge heard he needed his licence for work.
Mark Duffy, Upper Drumaweir, Greencastle, appeared before Judge Derek McVeigh at Carn court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to having no insurance and no NCT certificate on the date in question.
The court heard that the 20 year old, who had previous convictions including one for dangerous driving, had only had the car a few days when he was stopped by Gardai on his way from Glengad to Moville. He immediately insured the vehicle after his arrest, Sgt. Danny Devlin told the court. Defence solicitor Ciaran MacLochlainn said his client currently worked as a crab fisherman in Scotland and worked six weeks away at a time.
He needed his car to get him from his home to a bus that took him to catch the ferry to Scotland.
Judge McVeigh gave the defendant credit for pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity. He did not impose a driving ban but handed down fines totalling €1,050, respectively, for having no insurance, not displaying a valid insurance disc and for not having a valid NCT certificate.
