Donegal student grant rises to €3,420 03.07.07

Donegal students will be among 56,000 third level students throughout the country who are in line for a 10% rise in their college grants.
Donegal North East T.D., Deputy Niall Blaney said the rise in the further and higher education grants would help ease the burden for cash-strapped college students.
“The increase announced by Education Minister, Mary Hanafin, will mean a rise in the maximum rate of ordinary grant to €3,420 for 2007/2008," he said.
“Students who qualify will also have the student service charge paid on their behalf.”
Meanwhile, more than 12,500 students in receipt of the special rate of maintenance grant will benefit from an increase of more than 14%, bringing the maximum rate to €6,690.
Deputy Blaney added: “As it stands, many young people have to work their way through college. This can be a very worthwhile experience for most students but some find that the pressure to finance their college costs overshadows their third level learning experience.
“This increase will go some way towards lessening that burden for those who are most in need of assistance."
