Planners deadlocked on €70m Buncrana plan 25.06.07

A planning decision on the controversial €70m proposal for the former Fruit of the Loom seaside site in Buncrana has been put back for another month.
The former Fruit of the Loom site at Shore Front. An Bord Pleanala, the planning appeals board, held three meetings last week in a bid to made a decision on Jansu's multi-use complex comprising luxury apartments, retail and leisure space and car park.
However, they were unable to reach agreement and announced a new target
date of July 18th - more than four months behind schedule - for a decision on whether or not to give the project the go ahead.
The application sparked controversy in 2006 after it received strenuous opposition from the Shore Front Residents' Association whose concerns centre chiefly on the scale of the development and the increased traffic volumes the proposed complex would create.
A majority vote by Buncrana Town Council rejected an application to rezone the area in the town plan from industrial to commercial, however, the necessary rezoning has since taken place.
