Rural Donegal library link a big success 14.06.07

The Donegal Library Service is urging councillors to make permanent the Taobh Tire pilot project which brings a library link to rural areas and includes a cross-border mobile library.
As part of the project, 14 access points were set up in isolated geographical areas to provide library and information services to people, in co-operation with a number of local community groups.
The St. Johnston Resource Centre was included in the scheme along with groups in south west Donegal and the Gaeltacht areas among others.
The pilot project also included the introduction of a cross-border mobile library that services areas such as Muff, Bridgend and Culmore in Derry.
County Librarian Eileen Burgess reported to the local authority this week on the success of the project. She told councillors that the pilot project was such a huge success it should be made permanent in Donegal and rolled out nationally by the Government.
"We generated a lot of funding from outside agencies and we have required a small amount for Donegal County Council to match that," said Ms. Burgess.
"But with this funding and with the partnerships that we have created with community organisations across the county, we have been able to extend services much more widely that most other local authorities have been able to do across the country."
