Q. I graduated from college last year and am claiming
Jobseeker’s Allowance as I have not been able to find a job. I heard
that the Government had announced a scheme that would help people
get work experience. Is this true?

You may be referring to the new National Internship Scheme which
the Government launched recently. The scheme will provide work
experience opportunities for 5,000 unemployed people in the private,
public or community and voluntary sectors.
Participants in the scheme will be offered an internship of between
6 and 9 months with a host organisation. Under this scheme, if you
take up an internship you can keep your social welfare payment and
will get an extra €50 per week. The scheme will run for 2 years so
applications for internships will continue to be accepted until June
2013.
Individual internship positions will last from 6 months to a maximum
of 9 months.
To be eligible for the National Internship Scheme, you must be
unemployed and getting Jobseeker’s Benefit or Jobseeker’s Allowance
for 3 months or signing on for credits for 3 months.
FÁS is responsible for managing the scheme, in conjunction with the
Department of Social Protection. If you are interested in being
considered for an internship, you should send an email to
govinternprg@fas.ie or
contact your local FÁS office.
