Q.  I would like to go to Germany to look for work. Can my Jobseeker’s payment be transferred to there?

22.08.11

If your payment is Jobseeker’s Benefit, it may be transferred to another EEA member state for up to 13 weeks, if you are looking for work there. You must be getting JB for 4 weeks before you can transfer it. If you apply to transfer your JB, it will be paid directly to you.

You will be required to register with the employment services of the country where you have gone to look for work within a week. You must take form Form U2 to the social services of the other country. You can get a completed Form U2 from your local social welfare office.

The 13-week period of payment may be extended to 6 months in exceptional circumstances. Also you may now transfer your JB payment more than once while you are unemployed provided you do not exceed the maximum period of 13 weeks (6 months if extended).

If you are getting Jobseeker’s Allowance you can go on holiday for a maximum of 2 weeks and get the 2 weeks payment on your return. You must notify your social welfare local office in advance and complete a form advising them of your travel arrangements. It can also be paid on your return from representing Ireland in an amateur capacity at an international sporting event.
