Q.  I was told that I may have to switch over to a new television service called Saorview. What is the digital switchover and where can I find out more about this?

01.10.12

From October 24 2012 the traditional analog TV signal will be switched off. If you currently get your TV signal by aerial you will need a Saorview-approved set top box for your old TV or a Saorview-approved digital television to continue to receive the free-to-air Irish TV channels (including RTÉ1, RTÉ 2, TG4 and TV3). In a small number of cases, you may need to have your aerial adjusted or replaced. Subscribers to cable or satellite TV will not be affected.
Saorview-approved set top boxes and televisions are available from electrical stores nationwide. Saorview has 98% coverage throughout the country, so receiving a signal shouldn't be an issue for most people.

If you cannot avail of the Saorview service you can use Saorsat, an alternative free digital satellite service which gives access to all the RTE channels. You will still need a television licence for your analogue television set (whether it has a set-top box or not). You can find more information about Saorview at  www.saorview.ie  and at  www.goingdigital.ie . You can call a lo-call helpline on 1890 940 980 if you have questions about the switchover.
