Q.  Last month, I left my job and moved to England to start a postgraduate course. Can I get a refund of the tax I paid from January to August this year?

21.10.12

As you are not working and you no longer live in Ireland you may be entitled to a refund of some of the tax you paid this year. This is because under the PAYE system your tax liability is spread out evenly over the year. When your employer calculates your tax liability, they calculate the total tax due from 1 January to the date which your most recent wages are paid. This means if your income is reduced, for example, when you left your job, you will have unused tax credits and may be due a tax refund.

You should apply 4 weeks from the date you finished work. As you are not working and have left the country, your application for a tax repayment must be made on tax repayment Form P50 which is available on the Revenue website, www.revenue.ie . You send the application to your district tax office together with Parts 2 and 3 of your P45. You should claim your refund within 4 years of the end of the year to which the claim relates and claims made after this time cannot be repaid.
